The Rod This was painted before the war in Kuwait. Artists sometimes foretell events without realising it. The Rod is a symbol of a spiritual connection that we can hold on to in spite of terrible situations in the world. The desert represents the world as it can be — a place without water, which is the symbol of truth. Above, in the sun, there is a place representing an ocean of truth. The Annunciation This shows the angel Gabriel descending, bearing the Rod of Jesse: the higher energy falls to earth as flowers. Mary raises her hands to receive the message. Medium: Mische technique (oil and egg tempera). Hand-embellished giclee on canvas of painting 36" x 17"

Self-portrait with Glasses This was painted after I was told I would lose my sight in a few years. For two years I lived under that threat, and I painted this picture in great fear, but the diagnosis proved incorrect, and I can still see twenty years later. Boy on a Mountain This was painted after my son died in 1979. I did it from a photograph taken when he was two years old. The barbed wire symbolises his life, which was full of difficulties, and the mountains and sky represent a better place where his spirit is at rest. Medium: Mische technique (oil and egg tempera).
